Welcome to my personal page!
Today, thousands of Canadian women are living with ovarian cancer and another 2,800 will be diagnosed this year.
This walk is very personal for our family.....We have lost 4 family members to Ovarian Cancer, my mom, 2 sisters-in-law and my niece whose mom also passed away from this cancer. On my husbands side of the family there is the BRCA1 Gene....This gene is inherited and increases the risk of Breast Cancer and Ovarian Cancer. A child of a parent who carries this gene has a 50% chance of inheriting BRCA1 (1 in 2) When you have this gene you increase your chances of getting cancer. For Breast Cancer its a 67% chance and with Ovarian Cancer its a 60% chance.....In our family my daughter Nicole has inherited the BRCA1 gene as has 2 of her cousins. The only way to prevent getting these cancers is having preventative surgies...These women have done this. Nicole still has another surgery in the new year but what it entails is, a hysterectomy, ovaries and tubes removed. Also a full mastecomy. These women have chosen life over the chance of having cancer. These are not easy choices to make. The hope is one day that they can find a way to stop this gene. Once you are born there is no way to stop it..........Each of these women is central to a family. Every one of these women has people who love her. Just being there to support and honour her means everything. That’s why I’m participating with thousands of others at the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope.
The Walk celebrates the hope I carry with me every day – the hope for a future without this disease.
Every dollar I raise supports Ovarian Cancer Canada, the only national charity that champions the health and well-being of women with ovarian cancer and others at risk of this disease. Funds will be used to fund vital research, spur advocacy efforts, and provide support so that we can help women with, or at risk of, ovarian cancer live fuller, better, longer lives.
Please provide your support by giving generously. Better yet, if you are up for a challenge this September, come out and join me. Together we can make a difference.
