2019 Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope in Toronto, Ontario

Our Supernova Sandy Team

This July 24th will be the first anniversary of Sandy’s passing. Our family’s acute pain has eased, yet Sandy’s absence in our lives remains palpable. Last September, with the encouragement of Sandy’s old friend Janice Bartsch, my family and others joined with Ovarian Cancer Canada in its annual Walk of Hope. It was a way to honour Sandy’s life and to raise money for increased research into this hideous disease.

On September 8th we will once again walk in Sandy’s memory. Our goal is to raise $100,000 for this cause. Each year 2,800 Canadian women are diagnosed with OC. A majority of those afflicted will die within five years. Sadly, this disease remains the deadliest form of female cancer. At the same time, medical outcomes have not improved over the past five decades. This dismal fact reflects the complexity of the illness and the relatively small number of its victims. But most importantly, there is insufficient funding for research. While my family will walk for Sandy for the rest of our lives, this year’s walk will be our major fundraising contribution for Ovarian Cancer Canada, the only national charity dedicated to this cause. We want to honour Sandy’s six year fight to overcome this disease and her resolute determination to learn and impart information to heal herself and other women.

Our team name is Supernova Sandy; our two captains are two of Sandy’s oldest friends, Janice Bartsch and Carmen Valente. Please consider your support. And if you would like, please come out and join us on September 8th.
