Team Lotus (in memory of Gail)
Lotus: a beautiful new flower miraculously rises each morning, out of its muddy roots, in the muddy waters
As many of you know, my sister Gail passed away in January of this year from ovarian cancer. She had fought so hard after her initial diagnosis 3 years ago and then the recurrence last spring. She faced each day with dignity, courage and positivity, and was always hopeful about new research in the field.
To honor Gail's memory and to support a cause that was so important to her, I am participating again in the Ovarian Cancer Walk on Sunday, September 8, 2019, under TEAM LOTUS, the team name Gail had previously created for the Walk of Hope (you can read below the message she sent out last year)
If you are available on the 8th, please join me on Walk Day and/or feel free to make a donation to support the continued work Ovarian Cancer Canada is doing to fund research and raise awareness.
WHEN: Sunday, September 8, 2019
WHERE: Kildonan Park, North Picnic Shelters. It is pretty easy to find parking along the road inside the park.
WHAT TIME: Registration and hat pick-up starts at 8:30, but the walk doesn't start until 10. You can opt to do a 2.5 km or 5 km walk.
COST TO REGISTER: $25. (*You can also do an individual walk instead of joining the team; you just need to click register above.)
Thanks, so much, Heather
(written by Gail, fall 2018) Today, thousands of Canadian women are living with ovarian cancer and another 2,800 will be diagnosed this year. I was recently diagnosed with a cancer recurrence after one year of NED (no evidence of disease). Now I am on a different path, living with ovarian cancer. I have met so many different women in the last two years from across Canada and the U.S. It is horrifying, what is happening to our women. Almost barbaric. You need to know about this. There are women who are achieving a good outcome, but way too far and few between. Cure continues to be elusive at this point. I am excited however, by a few developments in science and research. That's where the money comes in. These advancements will give some women a bit more time. Hope.
The Walk celebrates the hope I carry with me every day – the hope for a future without this disease. For all of our women.
This year’s goal is to raise $2.1 million. Every dollar I raise supports Ovarian Cancer Canada, the only national charity entirely dedicated to this important cause. Funds will be used to provide support, increase awareness, and fund vital research so that we can change the future for the women we love.
Please provide your support by giving generously. Together, we can make a difference. Anything will help. Please click on the link below to get to my Team Lotus page, where you can make a donation. STEINN, STEFAN AND I thank you. xoxo
