Help us Celebrate 15 years of Walking for ovarian cancer!
I can remember the first walk like it was just yesterday – Peggy Truscott, a woman in Toronto living with ovarian cancer, came to visit my little office and asked if we could help her get a walk together for the Toronto Support Group. There had been many losses that spring, and the women were discouraged. Peggy thought if they could walk in the park, with their families, friends, and of course, their dogs, they would feel the strength of a broader community helping them. It was our year end, and I felt strapped financially. But she sat across the desk from me, a woman living with her third recurrence, and told me with every bit of energy she had left, she and her family would do all the work. It was impossible to say no. We found money to make T-shirts, and print brochures. And I arrived at Sunnybrook Park very early that Sunday morning to find Peggy and her team tying sunflowers on all the trees, marking a path, and setting up coffee. Then people started to arrive, and they came in droves. Maybe 325 or 350 – and the fundraising count at the end of the walk? More than $40K!!
And then the concept exploded – Montreal, Halifax, Vancouver, Calgary, on and on, walks growing in many cities. To date – more than $21 MILLION has been raised. Sadly, Peggy did not survive to see the second walk, or to know the incredible impact one person with a dream could have on our community. I will never forget her.
Since that first walk, more than 26,000 women have succumbed to ovarian cancer, and more than 40,000 have been diagnosed. Ovarian Cancer Canada continues to lead the charge to make a difference. With a new awareness campaign this year, a new recurrence guide for women and their caregivers, and a government relations plan – we are changing the conversation. And the Walk of Hope fuels our mission.
