Mark & Elisa's Ovarian Cancer Run of Hope 2021
Our journey with ovarian cancer began when my wife Elisa was diagnosed in 2019. Through many kinds of treatment, our family has experienced an emotional rollercoaster. While spirits were high after initial treatment, we recently learned that Elisa’s cancer has recurred, and treatment continues today. Although we were devastated by this news, our hope endures and changes to embrace the possibility of a future without this disease.
Sadly, our story is all too common for women and their families experiencing ovarian cancer. This year in Canada 3,100 women will be diagnosed with this disease, and half will not survive past five years. We simply must do better. Each of these women is central to a family, and every one of these women has people who love her. That’s why I hope you’ll join me in supporting vital progress to improve outcomes for these families.
On Sunday September 12, 2021, I will be participating with thousands of others at the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope. Every dollar I raise supports Ovarian Cancer Canada, the only national charity that champions the health and well-being of women with ovarian cancer and others at risk of this disease. Funds will be used to fund vital research, spur advocacy efforts, and provide support so that we can help women with, or at risk of, ovarian cancer live fuller, better, longer lives.
Ovarian cancer research and treatment continues to lag behind more common forms of cancer, so lending your support can really make a huge difference. We are hoping to exceed our fundraising totals from last year as one of this region’s top fundraisers. With your help we can do it.
This year’s event will be virtual, so instead of gathering with others to walk, I will again be running a 12K solo race from Myra Gate to Ruth Gate along a restored section of the Kettle Valley Railway Trail in beautiful Myra Canyon. I will be running on Sunday, September 12, 2021 if air quality and fire safety permits.
Please join me in this critical cause. Together we can make a difference.
