Ten years on -- Ten Years Strong!
My team of family members near and far, beloved friends and family, co-workers, neighbours, friends and families and family of friends -- all have been loving and wonderful supporters to me and my family as we have gone through this OC journey.
Ten years ago, it was July 2011 when TOHCC opened an OR during summer shut-down and a wonderful Gyne-oncologist came back from her summer vacation to operate and save my life. I was diagnosed at stage IV, found because of a metastasis to the lymph node in my neck.
I have been through multiple surgeries, metastases, rounds of chemotherapy and maintenance therapy, and different types of radiation.
And I'm Still Here! It seems like a miracle, to be living with this disease ten years on.
I have lost a few friends to this disease now, as well. And I have been there for some monumental wins to move treatment for ovarian cancer into the 21st century, joining the wonderful team at OCC when they successfully asked Parliament to include a budget item that would directly fund clinical trials that were ready to start across Canada but that kept getting missed due to typical grant funding requirements that simply did not make sense for ovarian cancer patients.
Happily, today I can tell you that your fundraising makes a serious and meaningful difference! We are changing history with every year that we walk with the dedication and love as we have; soon I expect we will start to see the prognoses changing drastically as more women like me can actually live with ovarian cancer, rather than see their lives quickly ended by it.
Thanks for walking with me. You'll always be in my heart.
