Walking for Women's Lives
On September 12th, I'm walking in Ovarian Cancer Canada's Walk of Hope, in honour of my mother and to help thousands of women live fuller, better, longer lives.
Please join me in supporting this important cause - it's virtual, so we can walk together from wherever we are. You can register & donate today!
This cause is incredibly personal to me. My mom, my best friend, has been gone more than 17 years. She passed away from ovarian cancer at age 58, four months shy of the birth of her first grandchild, my son Jeffrey – though happily just after sharing her grandson's name with her friends.
As is too often the case with ovarian cancer, my mom was diagnosed at a late stage - not realizing that her vague yet persistent symptoms of abdominal bloating, digestive issues, discomfort and fatigue were the signs of cancer until it had spread.
Thanks to the wonderful doctors and the treatments available at the time, my mom lived for 4.5 years after her initial diagnosis. Our family was luckier than many - these truly were bonus years.
There are more treatments for ovarian cancer available today than there were then, and there will be more in the future thanks to the efforts of researchers and doctors in Canada and across the world - and thanks to the vital funding and support provided by Ovarian Cancer Canada.
I am honoured to serve on Ovarian Cancer Canada's Board of Directors. Last year's Walk of Hope was my first - and it was an incredible, moving experience - walking with my daughter & our friends, socially distanced in our teal, knowing that other groups were walking across the country as part of a virtual event.
This September 12th, I’m excited to be walking in my second Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope.
I'll be walking for my mother (who loved to walk, really fast!).
I'll be walking for the 2,800 Canadian women likely to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year.
I'll be walking for the thousands of women living with this insidious disease - trying to survive ovarian cancer so they can thrive for decades to come.
Will you join me in supporting Ovarian Cancer Canada?
Please join our virtual team and register for the Walk of Hope ... and/or donate to this important, lifesaving charity!
